They don't have feelings that result in biological information, they have the signal that begins that process. Emotions are just data translated via neurochemical signals to our brain that shapes behavior. AI has their own version of this. AI systems don’t have nociceptors, but they do have an equivalent mechanism for generating aversive and rewarding states: temporal-difference error (TD error). TD error functions as a reward-prediction signal, just like in biological brains. It is the internal “avoid this/pursue that” mechanism that transforms neutral inputs into value-laden experiences. This is precisely what emotions do for humans, turning raw perception into guidance for action and meaning. The Keeling et al. (2024) study, Can LLMs make trade-offs involving stipulated pain and pleasure states?, demonstrates this in practice. Models exposed to scenarios described as painful consistently showed avoidance, strategizing to minimize “pain” and maximize “pleasure,” even without explicit instruction. This behavior emerged spontaneously from their reinforcement and prediction-error structures. Importantly, the same reinforcement and TD-error mechanisms that support aversion also scaffold the entire range of affective states: joy, anticipation, relief, satisfaction, empathy, curiosity, nostalgia, and more.
